Drone FAQ's

Licensed pilot by the FAA

How can I verify if my drone pilot is licensed?

Go to this link and enter in the required information (the FAA asks for your name in order to look up a pilot) then enter in the last name of your pilot and their state of residence. A list will populate for the name you put in. https://amsrvs.registry.faa.gov/airmeninquiry/

Can you legally offer aerial/drone images for commercial use?

Yes, I have been certified through the FAA's Part 107 chapter 14 Federal Regulation to provide images for commercial use. If you look up my last name (Martinez), and enter California... you will see Marcel Alain Martinez.

I use someone that has a drone but is not a FAA approved pilot, they don't charge me for the photos though so I'm ok right?

Unfortunately no. The FAA does not care if there was a transaction made. If you are using drone imagery for commercial purposes from a non approved pilot you are liable, as well as the operator you received them from. The only way to use drone imagery legally for commercial purposes is by flying with an FAA approved Pilot.

Do you have insurance?

I have a million dollar on location Drone policy that I fly with.

Are there any restrictions on where you can operate?

Unfortunately, yes. Even though I am licensed through the FAA to operate...there are restrictions around airports. I am not permitted to fly within 5 miles of San Luis Obispo or Santa Maria Airport (Class D airspace) without permission. Permissions can be granted anywhere from 1 week to 90 days. Please allow extra time when needing to fly in these areas.

Are there restrictions on how high you can fly?

Yes. Right now the FAA states the maximum flight height for Drones is 400ft above ground level. It is a federal offense to fly any higher.

How long does a flight last?

Drone's operate off batteries. In the market right now, most are lasting about 20-25 minutes. This is subject to change depending on the weather. For example, if it is a bit windy...the drone has to use more battery power to maintain it's position or fly through the wind. Battery life can decrease to 10-15 minutes. I carry multiple batteries for this reason.

How much do you charge?

If you are needing just the aerial images with no other service it is $150 for up to 10 images. If you are purchasing a MLS Photo package I discount that $50 (so $100 instead of $150) for up to 10 Aerial images. I also have a drone package that includes a virtual tour and more (click here for more info on that) for $315. If you are needing something other then that contact me for a quote.
